1869 – In Dumbarton, Scotland, the clipper Cutty Sark is launched and is one of the last clippers ever built, and the only one still surviving today.
1943 – Lebanon gains independence from France.
1963 – US President John F. Kennedy is assassinated and Texas Governor John Connally is seriously wounded.

 

1968 – The Beatles release The Beatles (known popularly as The White Album).

 

1975 – Juan Carlos is declared King of Spain following the death of Francisco Franco.

 

1986 – Mike Tyson defeats Trevor Berbick to become youngest Heavyweight champion in boxing history.
1987 – Two Chicago television stations are hijacked by an unknown pirate dressed as Max Headroom.

PHILIPPINE HISTORY TODAY

EVENT

1787 – Pedro de Sarrio was appointed as governor-general of the Philippines after Jose Basco y Vargas who asked to be relieved because of the opposition of the Audencia to his policies. Basco left the Philippines for Spain.

1935 – A crowd of around 125,000 people on the shores of San Francisco Bay to witness the take-off of the Pan American World Airways famed flying-boat, China Clipper, on the first trans-Pacific commercial flight in history. After 59 hours, 48 minutes flying-time landed on the waters of Manila Bay,  it established the first air-link between the Philippines and the United States.

BIRTH

1896 – Jose Corazon de Jesus,  Filipino poet who used Tagalog poetry to express the Filipinos’ desire for independence during the American occupation, was born in Sta. Cruz. Manila.

1913 – Cecilia Muñoz-Palma, the first Filipino woman to be chosen Justice of the Supreme Court, was born in Bauan, BatangAS.
